How often should you have a dental checkup?

A plain-language guide to dental checkups: why they matter, how often people are usually advised to come, and what happens at one.

Why checkups matter

Many dental problems start quietly. A small cavity or early gum irritation often causes no pain. A checkup lets a dentist spot these early, when treatment is usually simpler.

How often

Many people are advised to visit about every six months. Some need to come more or less often, depending on their teeth and gums, their habits and their history. Your dentist will tell you what suits you.

What happens at a checkup

The dentist looks at your teeth, gums and bite, may take X-rays where needed, and talks you through what they see. If something needs treatment, you are told the options and the cost before anything starts.

When not to wait

Do not wait for your next checkup if you have constant pain, swelling, a broken tooth or bleeding that does not stop. Message or call the clinic and we will see you as soon as we can.
